Course Summary

Becoming a counselor in the postmodern constructivist tradition requires transformational awareness through squaring up against real life experiences and facing authenticity toward achieving freedom from past conflicts. Self-reflection allows counseling students to learn how they must guide clients in redesigning their possibilities (Greason, & Cashwell, 2009: Pelowski et al., 2017; Shiflett et al., 2017). Counselors’ compassion for clients allows clients to trade internal scripts for empowering responses until these positive productive responses are automatic. This process is one that can lead to wellbeing and social advocacy for consumers of cognitive services (Schomaker & Ricard, 2015; Skovholt & Trotter Mathison, 2011; Teyber & Teyber, 2010).

The psychoeducational problem that this research study addressed is that any beliefs and biases held by CITs will influence their client counselor alliances and the quality of their therapeutic outcomes as a counselor (Ivers et al., 2021). CITs must develop an awareness of their personal characteristics, beliefs and biases about communities they serve (Feize & Faver, 2019; Merrell-James et al., 2019). Based on personal construct theory (PCT) in the context of graduate counselor education, using art therapy to engage self-reflection this research was conducted to increase self-awareness of multicultural competency (Ratts et al., 2016). The objective was accomplished while highlighting the objectification and otherness associated with cultural preconceptions and misconceptions. Exploring art as metaphor or collage as blended fractal connections may be a precursor to, an impetus for appreciating multiculturalism. Thematic Apperception (TAT) is a process that allows interpersonal decentering (Jenkins & Nowlin, 2018), which is an important step toward opening up to cultural sensitivity and subsequent multicultural competency. Both art and technology may be instrumental in delivering multicultural content and engaging students and professionals in meaningful ways that enhance open communication and understanding (Binlot, 2018).

About the Author

No one intervention, webinar, or course can measure or determine multicultural competency. A person must continually engage in self-reflection about how they want to live up to their professional creed and support social equity in their professional space.

We should take advantage of opportunities to recognize and analyze the impact our disposition has on those we serve.
