Lesson Three Collage Activity

Increasing self-awareness about cultural biases that may interfere with the client-counselor therapeutic alliance may positively impact therapeutic outcomes. The questions posed regarding the viability of this art-based exercise where counselors in training (CITs) analyzed collages in terms of their personal experience by looking at the artistic elements as an entrée to thinking about relationships. Recognizing relationships was helpful in the quest to find out what future counselors' conceptions were about their own multicultural competency (MC). I also studied how MC is perceived by (CITs), and how they perceived this creative arts exercise as an approach to engender self-reflection.

Two developmental domains of the MSJCC framework of Ratts et al. (2015) – counselor self-awareness and client world view are the focus of this course. The results of the research study showed that the apperception activity was positively associated with the CITs self-awareness of their multicultural competence as reflected in their responses to various interview questions. As complex challenges continue to pervade global society, new approaches are needed to counteract persistent societal concerns.

The findings indicated that the collages, when implemented in conjunction with reflective learning activities, are effective in promoting students’ multicultural and social justice counseling competencies. The CITs reported that the art-based activity was effective in bringing multicultural course concepts to life. They also noted that the exercise stimulated difficult—but necessary— conversations about race, ethnicity, privilege, and power.

Based on literature reviewed about apperception, the use of collages in art-based therapy included decisions regarding, supervisory considerations, client-counselor alliance, and self-reflection theory. The potential impact of the art-based activity is significant for multicultural competence and equity in the provision of quality counseling service.
